Gator women holding steady in fourth after three days at NCACs

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Competition continued Friday (Feb. 15) at the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Swimming and Diving Championships held at Denison.

After three days of competition, the Gators sit in fourth place with 643 points.

The night started with the 200 medley relay. The team of Anna Verardi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), McClaren Rodriguez (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City), Aimee Verardi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Sadie Brown (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community) placed fifth, finishing at 1:48.72.

The Gators had four swimmers in finals of the 400 individual medley. Emily Schaefer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) and Riley Aul (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) swam in the B Final. Schaefer won the heat, and finished 10th overall, timing at 4:38.03. Aul was 18th overall, racing to a time of 4:59.81. Megan Corletti (Monroeville, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Ariana Clark (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) competed in the C Final, taking the top two spots in the heat to score in 19th and 20th position with respective times of 4:54.76 and 4:55.56.

Four swimmers also qualified for finals in the 100 butterfly. Brown, Aimee Verardi and Rachel Tobler (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) scored in the B Final, with Brown the top finisher at 11th and 58.37. Verardi (15th, 59.87) and Tobler (17th, 1:01.21) also had strong showings in the B Final. Maggie Baham (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) swam the C Final, touching the wall third in the heat to score 21st in 1:00.93.

A pair of A finalists highlighted a group of four swimmers to qualify for finals in the 200 freestyle. Seniors Miranda Farley (Cleveland, Ohio/North Royalton) and Rodriguez qualified for the A Final in seventh and ninth positions, respectively, and their finals seedings held true. Farley came in at 1:55.37 and Rodriguez closed out the heat with a time of 1:56.41. Olivia Maack (Bristol, Ind./Elkhart Central) swam in the B Final, while Alyson Codner (Harvard, Mass./The Bromfield School) represented the Gators in the C Final. Maack was 13th overall at 1:57.35 and Codner claimed victory in her heat with a time of 1:59.31, to score at 19th.

A trio of Gators made the B Final of the 100 breaststroke. Corletti (12th, 1:09.41), Savannah Plaskon (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) (15th, 1:09.99) and Kaitlin Franzen (Jamestown, N.Y./Frewsburg Central) (18th, 1:12.24) swam in the event.

Anna Verardi, Maddie Janvrin (Woodridge, Ill./Naperville) and Clark closed out the evening in the 100 backstroke, with all three qualifying for the B Final. Verardi was the top Gator, clocking in at 59.62 and landing in 12th place. Janvrin claimed 14th, just behind her teammate at 59.88, while Clark touched in at 1:01.93, which was good for 16th.

The final day of action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 with the preliminaries of the 100 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, women's three meter dive, 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. The finals in those same events will begin at 6 p.m.
