Allegheny Opens NCAC Play With Sweep of Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College softball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a sweep of Oberlin College Wednesday (April 3).
 
The Gators won game one 12-3 and game two 10-2.
 
With the win, the Gators improve to 7-11 overall, while the Yeowomen fall to 7-11. 
 
Game One – Allegheny 12, Oberlin 3 (5 innings)
 
The Gator offense produced nine hits and earned four walks in the five-inning game one win.
 
Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) went two-for-four with three RBI, a double and a run scored.  Hayley Behr (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) also had two hits, including a double, three RBI and a run scored for the Gators.  Jessica Gordon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
 
Kyleigh Cason (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E Kellam) hit her first career home run, a two-run shot over the left field fence.  In addition to the home run, Cason was hit by two pitches and scored two runs. 
 
Jessica Valerino (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and Emily Cramer (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) had a double and a run apiece.  Samantha Valera (Chicago, Ill./Lane Technical), Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) and Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) also recorded a RBI.
 
Tori Vradenburg (Pasadena, Calif./San Marino) picked up the win for the Gators.  In the five innings she pitched, she struck out five and allowed two earned runs.
 
Game Two- Allegheny 10, Oberlin 2 (5 innings)
 
In game two, the Gators tallied nine hits and took advantage of six Yeowomen miscues to complete the sweep.  Eight different batters hit safely for Allegheny. 
 
Behr tallied two hits, including a double, with two RBI and a run scored to lead the way for the Gators.  Valera and Valerino had a hit and a RBI each.
 
Lafferty hit a RBI double while also scoring a run.  Ziggas, Gordon and Cramer all registered a RBI.
 
Kala Mahen (Mercer, Pa./Lakeview) picked up the win for the Gators in the circle.  She struck out three, allowing five hits. 
 
The Gators return to action Saturday (April 6) when they travel to DePauw University for a NCAC doubleheader.
