Gators Conclude Home Schedule Against Wittenberg

MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College softball team concluded the home portion of their schedule against Wittenberg University in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Thursday (April 25).

The Tigers won game one 9-1 before the teams tied game two at eight.

Game One – Wittenberg 9, Allegheny 1 (5 innings)

The Tigers got to work early with a three-run homerun in the first.  The Gators made up a run in the bottom of the frame when Hayley Behr (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) drove Samantha Valera (Chicago, Ill./Lane Technical) in with a single up the middle.  However, the Tigers took advantage of Gator miscues in the second and third as they scored five runs to take an 8-1 lead.  Wittenberg held the Gators off the board while tacking one run on in the top of the fifth to end the game in five innings.

Behr had a RBI single for Allegheny while Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) and Jessica Valerino (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) also had a hit.

In the bottom of the third, Kyleigh Cason (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E Kellam) was hit by her 16th pitch of the season.  That tied the Allegheny single season record.

Game Two – Allegheny 8, Wittenberg 8

Trailing 8-2 in the sixth inning, Allegheny loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth.  Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) singled to score Cason.  Valerino then hit a two RBI shot to right field, scoring Delaney Harrison-Peters (Silver Spring, Md./Walter Johnson) and Osgood, cutting the lead to 8-4.  After reloading the bases, Valera earned a walk to bring Ziggas home.  Cason was then hit by her record 17th pitch of the season, scoring one more to cut the lead to 8-6.

After keeping Wittenberg at bay in the top of the seventh, Emily Cramer (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) doubled to left center, scoring Osgood to narrow the game to one run. Valerino tied the game on a RBI single, scoring Cramer. The game was called at the end of the seventh with the teams tied at eight due to darkness.

Allegheny tallied 10 hits in the game.  Valerino had a pair of hits with three RBI.  Osgood led the team with three hits, scoring two runs.  Cason had a hit and two RBI.  Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, Va./Nanesmond River), Valera,  Ziggas and Cramer also registered a hit.

The Gators conclude their season Sunday (April 28) in a NCAC doubleheader at Denison University.
