Wooster Fights Past Gators in Doubleheader

WOOSTER, Ohio— The Allegheny College softball team dropped a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader at the College of Wooster Wednesday (April 17).

The Fighting Scots won game one 4-2 and game two 5-4.

Game One – Wooster 4, Allegheny 2

After a scoreless first inning, the Fighting Scots got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.  They added one more run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead into the fifth.

Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) earned a walk to start the fifth.  After moving to third with two-outs, Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) doubled to left field, scoring Osgood.   Samantha Valera (Chicago, Ill/Lane Technical) followed up with a RBI single to tie the game.  However, Wooster added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, two walks and a Valera single loaded the bases with two outs, but the Fighting Scots forced a groundout to end the game and pick up the NCAC win.

Lafferty and Valera had two hits and a RBI apiece to lead the Gators.  Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and Hayley Behr (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) also had hits.

Game Two – Wooster 5, Allegheny 4

The Fighting Scots took a three run lead through four innings before the Gators got on the board in the fifth. Osgood led off with an infield single, and moved her way to third with two outs.  Valera singled down the right field line, bringing Osgood across the plate to cut the lead to 3-1.

Kyleigh Cason (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E Kellam) singled to lead off the sixth.  Courtney Neal (Landsdale, Pa./North Penn) came in as a pinch runner, and scored on a Jessica Valerino (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) single, cutting the lead to one.

In the top of the seventh, Valera singled with one-out, and scored on a Cason double.  Behr followed up with her own RBI double, putting the Gators in front 4-3.

In the bottom of the frame, however, the Fighting Scots scored two runs on three hits to come back and win 5-4.

The Gators tallied 11 hits in the game.  Valera, Cason, Valerino and Jessica Gordon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had two hits apiece.
