DELEWARE, Ohio—The Allegheny College softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday (April 13) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
The Battling Bishops took game one 5-1 and game two 5-3.
Game One – Ohio Wesleyan 5, Allegheny 1
The Battling Bishops scored a run in the bottom of the first, and added three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
The Gators got on the board in the fifth.
Mariah Nablo (Williamsvile, N.Y./Williamsville North) hit a one-out single. Later in the inning,
Kyleigh Cason (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E Kellam) brought Nablo home on a sac fly, cutting the lead to 4-1. However, the Battling Bishops added one more run in the sixth and kept the Gators off the board to pick up the 5-1 win.
Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, Va./Nanesmond River),
Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area), Cason,
Samantha Valera (Chicago, Ill./Lane Technical) and
Emily Cramer (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) supplied the Gator hits.
Game Two – Ohio Wesleyan 5, Allegheny 3
Once again, the Battling Bishops put up a run in the bottom of the first to gain a quick lead. After three scoreless innings, the Gators got to work in the top of the fifth. Lafferty,
Hayley Behr (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Jessica Valerino (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) all singled to load the bases.
Jessica Gordon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came through with a two RBI single to put the Gators in front, 2-1.
However, Ohio Wesleyan put together a three run bottom of the fifth, then added one more in the sixth to move ahead, 5-1.
In the top of the seventh, Valerino hit a RBI single to plate Lafferty, but the Battling Bishops got out of the inning without any further damage to complete the sweep.
The Gators tallied eight hits in the second game, with Lafferty and Behr having two apiece. Gordon had a two RBI performance while Valerino had one. Lafferty,
Delaney Harrison-Peters (Silver Spring, Md./Walter Johnson) and
Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) scored the runs.
The Gators are back in action Wednesday (April 17) when they travel to the College of Wooster for a NCAC doubleheader.
