MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College baseball team earned a doubleheader split this afternoon against Baldwin Wallace University, thanks in part to a walk-off double by
Joe Killian in the bottom of the ninth of the first game.
Allegheny (5-7, 0-0 NCAC) was a 6-5 winner over Baldwin Wallace (8-11, 0-0 OAC) in the opener, while the Yellow Jackets defeated the Gators, 5-1, in the nightcap.
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game after a Mark Zimmerman RBI single in the third and a Spencer Badia RBI double in the fourth.
The hosts got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Austin Bristol reached on an error by the shortstop to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a
Cullen Flaherty groundout. After
Chase Davis went down looking,
Robert DiMaggio ripped a single to left that scored the freshman infielder.
Allegheny added four in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-2 lead. DiMaggio reached on a mishap by the third baseman and moved to second with a Killian walk.
Dan Bonnett followed that up with a single to load the bases, and DiMaggio crossed the plate after a passed ball to tie the game.
Ethan Pawlak then roped a single over the drawn in infield to score two, setting the score at 4-2 in favor of the hosts. Pawlak stole two bases on a
Jacob Shick at-bat, and while the junior infielder was retired in a pinch-hitting spot,
Patrick Orr was able to smoke a single the other way to add a run.
The Gators needed all of those runs as they promptly gave up their cushion in the top of the ninth. The Yellow Jackets put runners on the corners with one out after a pair of singles, and scored one of those players with an error. Zimmerman, after reaching on a fielder's choice, stole second to put the tying run in scoring position and came around to score following another mishap.
Allegheny calmed down after the pair of errors as Orr threw out Hunter Handel trying to steal second, while
Joe Nagel struck Chase Knodle out looking.
Flaherty led the bottom half off with a five-pitch walk, but remained at first following a pair of strikeouts. However, Killian was able to bring him in with a double into the left centerfield gap, over the Baldwin Wallace outfield.
Chase Boyer started the game, striking out four in two innings of work.
Justin Stascak provided the Gators with three shutout frames in relief, while Nagel picked up the win with two punchouts in two innings. The freshman right-hander was not charged with any of the three runs that scored in the top of the ninth.
Alex Albright was saddled with the loss in game one after giving up Killian's two-out, walk-off double.
Baldwin Wallace bounced back to take the second game, 5-1.
The Yellow Jackets scored two in the top of the first off
Wyatt Sibiga, thanks to an unassisted groundout to first by Zimmerman and a Handel sacrifice fly. Baldwin Wallace put its first two runners on via a walk and single, and they moved into scoring position after a passed ball.
Allegheny cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second. Killian led the frame off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, the senior third baseman moved to third on another passed ball and trotted home after the catcher threw it into left.
The visitors tacked on three in the top of the seventh to set the final score. With two outs and two on, Badia worked a four-pitch walk to load the bases. John Taylor then received a free pass to score one and Zimmerman ripped a two-out single to left that plated a pair.
Killian went 5-for-8 across the two contests, scoring two runs and driving in the aforementioned winner in game one.
Vincent Carone bashed two hits in the nightcap, while DiMaggio (3-5, R, RBI) and Flaherty (2-4, R) also tallied multiple hits in the opener.
Sibiga took the loss after giving up four runs in 6.2 innings of work. The freshman struck out six and walked four, allowing three more baserunners on hits.
Hayden Smith pitched a perfect eighth inning, while
Travis Neamon and
Shea Beaumont both made their collegiate pitching debuts in the top of the ninth.
Brandon Lekan earned the win in game two, going eight strong with seven punchouts against two walks and five hits. The only run he allowed was unearned thanks a passed ball.
Allegheny opens up conference play this weekend when it travels to Wooster for a pair of double-headers, starting at noon on Saturday, April 2.
