Allegheny Settles For Series Split at #21 Wooster

The Gators took the second game of the series, 12-8, before dropping games three and four

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Allegheny College baseball team finished off a victory to begin its three-game set with the No. 21 College of Wooster this afternoon, but the Fighting Scots took the final two contests to complete a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) series split.

Allegheny moved to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the NCAC, while Wooster is now 11-4 with a 2-2 mark in league play.

After game two of this Saturday's double-header was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gators finished off the "first day" sweep with a 12-8 victory over the then-No. 17 Fighting Scots.

Allegheny carried a 12-6 advantage into today's completion, giving it enough cushion to hold off its division rivals. The Gators' big inning came in the top of the third as they plated seven runs in the frame.

Tyler Wagner kicked off the scoring with a two-run shot to left center, scoring Joe Killian. Andrew Dawson added an RBI single that plated Max Sessions, and then with the bases juiced, Robert DiMaggio launched a blast over the wall in left center for a grand slam.

Patrick Orr added another two runs in the following stanza with his second homerun in as many days, scoring Sessions.

Trailing 9-0, Wooster rebounded to score six runs in the bottom half thanks to two singles that plated three, an error that scored two, and a sacrifice fly.

Wagner continued his strong game in the top of the fourth with a single down the leftfield line that scored DiMaggio. Allegheny added two more in the next frame with a two-run base hit from Killian that saw Jacob Shick and Austin Bristol touch home plate.

The Gators kept the hosts off the board for two innings once play resumed from the suspension, but the Fighting Scots were able to get a run back in the bottom of the seventh as a Jamie Lackner double scored Michael Wielansky. Wielansky brought in Jake Fling in the next frame to make it 12-8, but Cy Perry and Justin Stascak held Wooster scoreless from there to seal the victory.

Hayden Smith picked up the win in game two with five innings of two-run ball. Smith struck out four and allowed three walks and four hits.

Nanak Saran took the loss for the Fighting Scots after allowing nine earned runs in three innings.

Allegheny dropped the second game to Wooster, 8-2.

The Fighting Scots took a 2-0 lead after two innings with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. DiMaggio ripped a single to score Bristol in the top of the third, but that run was canceled out with a RBI double by Wielansky.

Wooster plated runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to finish its scoring output. Dan Bonnett brought in the Gators' second run in the top of the sixth with an RBI groundout.

Orr took the loss in the second game after allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings of work. Joe Nagel finished the game by also giving up four runs (three earned) in his 2.2 frames on the mound.

Zach Woullard went the distance to pick up the win, allowing two runs, four hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch in seven innings. Woullard struck out four and generated nine groundouts.

The Fighting Scots added another win in the nightcap, 10-3.

Wooster jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings with a single, double, triple, and groundout that all plated runs. The Gators got one back in the top of the fifth when Andrew Dawson was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded, and tallied two more with a Wagner homerun in the following frame that scored Bonnett.

After having their lead cut to 5-3, the hosts added five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to pick up the win.

Robert Julian took the loss after giving up three runs in 1.2 innings pitched. Tyler Schuch earned the win with five innings of two-run ball.

Allegheny is set to return to action tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. with a single game at Mount Union.
