Late Allegheny Goal Salvages Tie

Junior Cameron Olson scored the equalizer in the 88th minute, helping Allegheny escape Geneva with a 1-1 tie on Saturday evening.
Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – Junior Cameron Olson came through for the Gators in the waning moments of Saturday's contest against Geneva College, heading home a misdirection to give Allegheny a 1-1 tie over the Golden Tornadoes in the home opener at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Saturday evening.

Freshman Spencer Meschter deflected a corner from junior Axel Monzon in the 88th minute, setting the stage for Olson's heroics.  The junior took the deflected header from Meschter, rocketing home a header that curled around the far side post to tie the game late.

"I was pleased with the aggressiveness of our team compared to Wednesday," commented head coach Angelo Panzetta.  ""We needed to be more aggressive in the final third and we did a good job with that.  We had a solid game defensively as well, keeping Geneva on the perimeter."

Senior John Lichina played all 110 minutes in nets for the Gators, saving seven shots while turning aside 10 total attempts by the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva peppered the Gators in the two overtime periods, taking three shots on target.

Olson made one of his two shots on goal count, as Meschter and senior Daniel McCann also had great looks at the Geneva net.  Allegheny had eight corner attempts, including the Monzon corner that led to the game-tying goal, including a pair of corners during overtime.

Junior Alejandro Weil put the first shot on target for the Gators in the first, placing a header on net in the 13th minute.  Allegheny would get another look at the net late in the half with a corner by sophomore Alex Marks in the 30th minute, but the two teams played to a stalemate entering the halftime break.

Geneva came out firing in the second, placing a pair of shots on target within the first five minutes of the whistle. The Golden Tornadoes put the first goal on the board, taking advantage of a well played cross and sending a quick shot past Lichina to take a one-goal lead in the 74th minute.

The Gators had three corner kick opportunities within the final five minutes, striking gold with the third attempt, when Axel placed a strong cross deep into the penalty area.  Olson capitalized to send the game into overtime.  Meschter placed a shot from close range, but Geneva net minder Bryan Butler made an outstanding save to keep the game tied.  Lichina stopped a last-minute shot from 20 yards out to seal the tie.

Saturday's tie maintains Allegheny's unbeaten start to the regular season as the Gators continue to hold opposing defenses to one goal games.  The Gators have yet to concede more than one goal to an opponent this season and hope to continue that streak on the road against LaRoche on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
