Box Score BEREA, Ohio – Sophomore
Brenton Stoddart scored the first goal of his collegiate career, as freshman
Liam McNamee made his second goal of the season a game-winner in the 67th minute to send the Gators to a 2-1 win over Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday evening at Tressel Field.
McNamee sent home a well-hit ball into the upper-left corner of the goal off of a cross by senior
Keith Danley, breaking a 1-1 tie to give the Gators the late lead. Danley's helper gives the senior captain his first point of the 2013 campaign, as McNamee's goal gives him a team-leading two tallies on the season. Senior goalkeeper
John Lichina made six saves in net as the Gators turned aside 20 total shots from the Yellow Jackets.
Stoddart found the back of the net for the first time in his career in the 41st minute off of a fortuitous bounce inside the six-yard penalty area. Camping on the far post, Stoddart found a quick touch from senior
Brian Graham that drifted just out of the reach of the Yellow Jackets goalie, parking a slow roller pass the goal line into the net.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the pace early in the contest, putting pressure on the Gators with two corners in the first 10 minutes. Lichina made his first save of the game in the 12th minute, finishing the first with four saves on 12 Baldwin Wallace shots.
The Allegheny net-minder made four saves in the first 17 minutes, keeping the Yellow Jackets' offense at bay during the opening minutes of the contest. Stoddart subbed into the game in the 34th minute, finding the back of the net soon after for the Gators.
Baldwin Wallace put the pressure back on the Gators in the second half, tying the game in the 62nd minute off of a header inside the six-yard box. McNamee entered the game in the 65th minute, scoring less than two minutes later. The Yellow Jackets rebounded from the Allegheny goal, placing shots towards the Allegheny net in the 68th and 74th minute, but the Allegheny defense was able to keep Baldwin Wallace off of the scoreboard, sending away two corner kick opportunities within the final 10 minutes to pick up the win.
Tuesday's victory is Allegheny's second straight over the Yellow Jackets, as the Gators picked up a 2-0 win during the 2012 campaign to break a four-game scoreless skid against Baldwin Wallace.
Allegheny will next travel to Penn State-Behrend on Saturday, Sept. 21 to take on the Lions. The Gators last played Penn State-Behrend in 2011, when the squad pulled off a 2-1 victory over the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) member.
