Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Tartans

Senior goalkeeper John Lichina made four saves in net for the Gators against Carnegie Mellon.
Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Gators saw their five-game unbeaten start to the season snapped by a determined Carnegie Mellon squad, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Conceding a goal in the 33rd minute, the Allegheny offense began to generate pressure on the Carnegie Mellon backline in the second half, but the Tartans were able to walk away with the victory, dashing Allegheny's unblemished record in the process.

Senior John Lichina played a solid game in goal for Allegheny, making four saves while the team turned aside 15 total shots from the Tartans.  The Allegheny offense was held in check for most of the game, as the Gators were held without a shot in the first half.  The Gators were also held without a corner kick for the entire game while Carnegie Mellon took five corner opportunities.

The Tartans controlled the pace from the beginning of the game, taking three shots on goal in the first 12 minutes.  Lichina made his first save of the game in the 22nd minute, but the Allegheny defense was unable to hold the Tartans at bay when a strong throw-in inside the six-yard box was knocked in to break the scoreless tie late in the first half.

Allegheny put more pressure on the Carnegie Mellon defense in the second, started by a wide shot from junior Cameron Olson in the 49th minute.  Sophomore Thomas Richter placed a shot on target in the 55th minute that was saved by Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper Christopher Madden.

Freshman Spencer Meschter had a shot blocked in the 60th minute as seniors Alex Etherington and Daniel McCann also made an attempt towards the Carnegie Mellon goal, but the Tartans were able to keep the Gators off the scoreboard.

The Gators will next travel to Berea, Ohio on Tuesday, Sept. 17 to take on Baldwin Wallace before heading to Erie, Pa. on Friday, Sept. 20 for a non-conference tilt against Penn State-Behrend.
