Tigers Blank Gators in Season Finale

Andrew Niklaus
Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers showed why they were crowned the North Coast Athletic Conference champions, clicking on all cylinders to down Allegheny 56-0 in the Gators' 2013 season finale.

The Tigers (9-1, 9-0 NCAC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and 49-0 at halftime, out-gaining the Gators (0-10, 0-9 NCAC) 654-125 and finishing with a 33-8 edge in first downs.

Wittenberg took control early, as the Tigers' offense scored on all seven first half possessions and the defense allowed just five Gator first downs while forcing eight first half Allegheny punts.

After the Tigers scored on the opening drive of the second half, the Gator defense buckled down, blanking the hosts the rest of the way.  The Gators held twice on fourth and goal, highlighted by a fourth down sack by senior Trevor Colvin in the fourth quarter with the ball on the one yard line.

However, the Gators could not solve the Tiger defense, managing just three first downs over the final two quarters.

Quarterback Jon Nigro completed 12 of 20 passes for the Gators for 46 yards and one interception, with Andrew Niklaus hauling in four grabs and Lucas Morton and Nick Deichler three apiece.  Deichler paced the Allegheny ground game with 30 yards on 12 carries, while Niklaus gained 26 yards on five tries.

Defensively, Cody Stolar and Ben Capella shared the game-high with seven tackles apiece, while Brad Burkley, Jake Szoszorek, Ryan Sherry, Colin Muldoon, and Raysean Glenn finished with five apiece.  Burkley posted two tackles for loss, while T.J. Henry made 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Wittenberg quarterback Reed Florence led the way offensively, completing 10 of 12 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 68 yards and a pair of scores.  The Tigers did the bulk of their damage on the ground, gaining 410 yards, led by Javanh Sanders, who ran 18 times for 194 yards and a pair of scores.
