Battling Bishops Top Gators

Kyle Smith ran for a season-high 77 yards for the Gators at Ohio Wesleyan
Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio - The Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops used a strong passing attack to hand Allegheny a 50-7 loss in North Coast Athletic Conference football action.

Ohio Wesleyan (3-1, 2-1 NCAC) completed 27 of 31 passes with five touchdowns through the air, while the Gators (0-5, 0-4) were limited to just 207 yards of total offense, despite holding a nearly 20-minute advantage in time of possession.

The Battling Bishops showcased their quick-strike offense from the start, taking a 7-0 lead on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Mason Espinosa to Dave Mogilnicki just 1:46 into play.  Espinosa would complete two more touchdown throws, while OWU also connected on a 22-yard field goal, to open up a 23-0 lead after one quarter of play.

The second quarter began in much of the same fashion as the first, as just over three minutes in, Espinosa connected on his fourth touchdown strike of the day, this one an 80-yarder to Calvin Cagney, to up the lead to 30-0.  The Battling Bishops would score twice more before the intermission to head into the locker room up 44-0.

Allegheny sophomore quarterback Kyle Smith would lead the Gators on a lengthy 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive to close out the game's scoring in the final moments of the third quarter.  After running four times for 36 yards, Smith completed an eight-yard pass to Brock Medva to put the ball inside the Ohio Wesleyan 20 yardline.  The signal caller would close out the six-minute drive himself on the next play, scampering into the end zone for the Gators' first rushing touchdown of the year.

Smith ran for 77 yards on the day - the highest output for a Gator this season - on 13 carries, while teammate Nick Deichler gained 47 yards on 10 carries.  As a team, Allegheny gained 113 rushing yards, and limited Ohio Wesleyan to just 37 on 22 carries.  The sizeable rushing margin helped the Gators to a season-best 39:43 time of possession, but OWU did its damage through the air, amassing 397 passing yards, led by Espinosa, who went 23-for-27 for 363 yards and five scores.

Smith was one of four quarterbacks to see time for Allegheny, as he went 3-for-5 passing with 22 yards.  Jon Nigro completed four of six passes for 49 yards, while Stephen Nymick went 4-for-9 and Tyler McLaughlin 3-for-6 in his collegiate debut.  Andrew Niklaus led the Gators with three catches for 35 yards, while Casey McGrath also hauled in three grabs, gaining 13 yards.  Deichler and Tom Bober each made two receptions.

Defensively, Jake Szoszorek finished with a team-high six tackles for the Gators, with Cody Stolar and Chris Patrick adding five stops apiece.  Pat Jameson and Ryan Sherry each finished with one sack for Allegheny, and Colin Muldoon tallied his first career interception.

The Gators will look to snap their five-game losing skid next Saturday, October 12th, when they welcome NCAC foe Wooster to Frank B. Fuhrer Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
