Gators Stifled By Tiger Defense

Nick Deichler ran for his first career touchdown at DePauw
Box Score GREENCASTLE, Ind. - After scoring on its first drive of the game, Allegheny was unable to hold on to the momentum, falling 23-7 to DePauw in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

The Tiger defense limited Allegheny to 202 yards of total offense and forced a pair of turnovers, while offensively, quarterback Matt Hunt threw for a pair of scores and kicker Eric Malm converted on three field goals as DePauw (3-4, 3-3 NCAC) extended the Gator (0-8, 0-7 NCAC) losing skid to eight games.

Things started well for the Gators, as the Allegheny wasted little time getting on the board after taking over on its own 41 following a DePauw punt on the game'sopening possession.  After a five-yard run from Anthony Opet and an eight-yard pass from Jon Nigro to Lucas Morton, Nick Deichler scampered for a 47-yard touchdown, with Ryan Mong's extra point putting the Gators in front 7-0 just four minutes into play.  It was the longest running play of the season for Allegheny, and marked Deichler's first career touchdown.

On the ensuing possession, Allegheny forced another DePauw punt, and looked to embark on another successful drive. Taking over at its own 36, Allegheny picked up three first downs, but saw the drive end abruptly on an interception. Hunt made the Gators pay for the miscue, as he opened the drive with a 16-yard run before firing a 39-yard touchdown strike to Barry Flynn to tie the game at 7-all with 3:30 left in the first quarter.

After the teams traded three scoreless possessions through the middle stages of the second quarter, it appeared as if the Gator defense was about to force DePauw into its fourth punt of the opening half with just under 10 minutes left in the second quarter.  However, the Tigers would convert on a fourth-and-three on the Allegheny 25, eventually taking a 10-7 lead on Malm's 31-yard field goal with 8:30 left in the half.

The Tigers would add to its lead in the final seconds of the half, with Malm connecting on a 41-yarder with 10 seconds left to give DePauw the 13-7 halftime lead.

The Gator defense came up with a pair of big stops in the early stages of the third quarter to keep the deficit at six.  On DePauw's opening possession of the second half, the Tigers were forced to punt after Cody Stolar stuffed a run on third-and-one.  On their next trip, the Tigers advanced the ball inside the Allegheny 15, but Ben Capella and Brad Burkley teamed up for a tackle for loss, sending out the field goal unit with 3:30 to play in the third quarter.  This time, Malm's 29-yard kick was no good, and the score remained 13-7 heading into the final stanza.

On its opening possession of the fourth quarter, DePauw looked to finally add onto its lead, with a 39-yard pass from Hunt to Conner Jeffers setting up first-and-goal at the Allegheny seven.  The Allegheny defense made yet another stand, as Hunt's third down pass into the end zone went incomplete thanks to pressure from Gator defensive lineman Chris Patrick, and DePauw was forced to settle for a 22-yard field goal from Malm to go in front 16-7.

The ensuing kickoff would pin Allegheny deep inside its own territory, and on third down, DePauw came up with its second interception of the day, returned to the Gator 14.  Two plays later, a personal foul backed up DePauw to the Gator 22, but Hunt would then complete his second touchdown strike of the afternoon, this one to JD Robinson, to increase the lead to 23-7 with 7:03 left in regulation.

Allegheny was unable to cut into the deficit, turning the ball over on downs on its ensuing possession, before DePauw ran out the clock to seal its third straight win.

Deichler finished with a career-high 71 yards on eight carries to pace the Gator offense, while Nigro completed 14 of 27 passes for 65 yards.  Andrew Niklaus led the Gators with six catches, with Derrick Emigh adding four receptions for 46 yards, including a 35-yard grab on a throw from Tyler McLaughlin.  Defensively, Raysean Glenn tallied a team-high nine tackles, with Stolar and Ben Capella posting seven apiece.

Hunt ended the day 15-for-32 through the air for 232 yards, with Flynn posting seven receptions for 78 yards.  DePauw running back Nikko Sansone ran for 120 yards on 29 carries, while Will Longthorne and Mitch Dwanger led the Tiger defense with seven tackles apiece.

The Gators will now enter their bye week, and will return to action on Saturday, November 9th, hosting Denison University on Senior Day at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
