MEADVILLE, Pa. – With a roster jam-packed with young talent, the Allegheny women's tennis team made an indelible first impression, defeating Baldwin-Wallace, 8-1, on Saturday as part of the Nancy J. Heath Invitational.
The Gators (1-0) were led by junior
Carolyn Shetter, who continued her outstanding play from last season with a win in No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. Shetter, along with freshman partner
Sloane Prince, defeated the Yellow Jackets, 8-6, in their doubles matchup as Shetter won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, in her singles match.
Allegheny swept the doubles matches, as freshmen
Mikaela Pope and
Tiffany Kollah won 8-2. Freshman
Sun Mo Koo and junior
Laura Steele completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 doubles spot.
The five singles matches won by Allegheny were won in straight sets. Prince and Koo both recorded impressive wins, winning their respective matches by the same 6-1, 6-0 score. Pope won in the No. 3 singles spot with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory.
The Gators will host two matches this week against Mercyhurst (Sept. 11) and John Carroll (Sept. 12) before traveling to Oberlin, Ohio for the Oberlin Invitational on Friday.
