Allegheny Bats Silenced in Pair of Losses to Amherst

Game One Box Score  --  Game Two Box Score

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Allegheny baseball squad faced a tough Amherst team Friday afternoon, as they dropped both ends of a double header 7-2 and 8-1.

Game one started out a pitcher's duel, as both teams saw their starting pitchers throw zero's through four innings. Unfortunately defensive miscues for the Gators in the bottom of the fifth caused the wheels to fall off for Allegheny, as seven Lord Jeffs crossed the plate to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

On the other side of the plate, the Gators could not get a feel for Amherst starter Bob Cook. Allegheny got on the board in the top of the seventh, trying to mount a late rally but it was too little, too late. The Lord Jeffs took game one 7-2, as both teams looked to regroup and get ready for game two of the twin bill.

The hits were just as hard to come by in game two, as Allegheny found themselves up against another Cook, this time left-handed John Cook. The Gators could muster only five hits and one run, as Amherst took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Allegheny got one back in the bottom of the fifth when Jeff Dassner scored on a Mike Kastelic sac fly to make the score 2-1. Again, uncharacteristic defensive mistakes cost the Gators in the top of the sixth, as Amherst plated four runs en route to an 8-1 victory.

Allegheny will conclude their Florida trip tomorrow morning, as they take on the Bantams of Trinity (CT) College in a double header Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
