AUBURNDALE, Fla. – An offensive explosion in game two, paired with a pitching gem by
Eric Brandt, helped the Allegheny baseball team break a four game losing streak and salvage a split with the Polar Bears of Bowdoin on Thursday afternoon.
The Gators got off to a slow start in game one, as their bats stayed relatively quiet throughout. Bowdoin would take a 3-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the second and one in the third as Allegheny struggled to get any offense going.
The Gators mustered just two hits over the first five innings, until they showed a sign of life in the bottom of the sixth. Allegheny doubled their hit total and
Mike Kastelic scored on a
Mike Pezzone double to left center to cut the Bowdoin lead to 3-1.
In the Bottom of the seventh the Gators picked up where they left off in the sixth, plating two more to tie the game at three. The rally started when
Zach Gray took the first pitch to left field, and continued when
Aaron Lynch singled through the right side to advance Gray to second. After an error loaded the bases and
Jeff Dassner struck out,
Mike Kastelic stepped up to the plate and plated two with a single to center field.
However the rally fell short, as Bowdoin plated one in the top of the eighth and took game one 4-3. The loss dropped Allegheny to 2-7 on the season.
However, the Gators would get their revenge in game two. Allegheny's bats would stay red hot as they peppered Bowdoin with nine runs on 14 hits. While the Gators offense was demolishing Bowdoin pitching, Allegheny starter
Eric Brandt was picking apart the Polar Bears line-up.
Brandt pitched a complete game, surrendering just three hits and one unearned run.
Allegheny took the lead with a two run third inning, and blew the game open with a four spot in the fifth. They would add another three in the seventh, dominating from start to finish with a 9-1 victory.
Lynch had a great day at the plate, going 4-5 and scoring two runs to lead the Gators. Pezzone went 3-8 at the plate to go along with three RBI. Five Gators recorded two hits in game two, including game one started
Kyle Davis and
Ben Lowmaster as Allegheny improves to 3-7 on the season.
The Gators will be back at it tomorrow afternoon, when they will take on the Jeffs of Amherst in a twin bill starting at 2:00 pm.
