PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball squad cut an early first half deficit to two, but a second-half offensive surge from a resilient Carnegie Mellon squad resulted in a 72-56 Tartans victory on Tuesday night at Skibo Gymnasium.
The Gators (3-3 overall, 2-0 NCAC) were led by senior forward
Daryl Ford, who tallied a team-high 12 points while also recording seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard
Kendall Hoffman led the team with 11 rebounds, scoring seven points in 24 minutes of game action.
Allegheny held an 8-7 lead with 14:40 remaining in the first half after a jumper by freshman guard
Makenzie Zidek. Carnegie Mellon (6-2 overall, 0-0 UAA) came back to build a six-point lead with 5:37 remaining in the half, but the Gators were able to cut the halftime deficit to two after a layup in the paint by freshman forward
Emma Pellicano.
The Gators held an 8-4 advantage in second-chance points in the first half as Carnegie Mellon scored nine points off of turnovers, entering the break with a 32-30 lead.
The Gators kept the Tartans lead within striking distance until Carnegie Mellon hit three consecutive shots from outside the arc, holding Allegheny scoreless for over three minutes to build a 59-39 advantage with 11:01 remaining in the second half. Carnegie Mellon held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, outscoring the Gators, 40-26, in the second frame.
Pellicano finished the game with nine points, shooting 4-for-7 from the field. Freshman guard
Rachel Vigliotti hit 3-of-5 shots from three-point range to tally nine total points. Sophomore
Marina Scarantino played 26 minutes for the Gators, recording three assists. Zidek finished with six points.
Allegheny was outscored, 14-4, inside the paint during the second half and finished the game shooting 5-of-26 from outside the arc. For Carnegie Mellon, senior Emily Peel went 9-of-11 from the field, recording a double-double with 22 points and 14 boards. The Tartans out-rebounded the Gators, 49-38.
The Gators will re-take the court on Thursday, Dec. 6 at home for a 7 p.m. matchup against Mount Aloysius.
