Box Score
MEADVILLE, Pa. - A lot has happened over the past 28 years, with the exception of one thing. Carnegie Mellon's reign of dominance over the Allegheny Men's soccer team came crashing down on Saturday night, as the Gators scored three straight goals in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Tartans 3-2.
The first half set the tempo for Allegheny, as they pressured the Carnegie Mellon back end relentlessly, creating multiple scoring opportunities. The Tartans would counter with a good attack of their own in the middle of the first half, an attack which included four straight corner kicks for Carnegie Mellon.
Both teams would go into half with no score on the board but plenty to feel good about.
The Tartans felt great in the early going of the second half, as they took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a goal by Alex Abedian. However, it would not take Allegheny long to return the favor as senior Matt Wientraub would put home his first goal of the season to tie the game at one.
You could sense the momentum shift in the favor of the home team, and the Gators took that momentum and ran with it. Less than five minutes later Weintraub played a beautiful ball to the streaking
David DelGreco who would bury his fourth goal of the season to give Allegheny their first lead of the game, 2-1.
The Gators would waste no time striking again, as junior
Chris Brennan scored his third goal of the season just seven minutes after the DelGreco goal to give Allegheny a 3-1 lead.
The Tartans would go down swinging, as they would make it interesting in the 88th minute, scoring their second goal to pull within one. But the Gators would lock it down defensively, not allowing another chance for the Tartans to pick up the 3-2 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
John Lichina had four saves, and freshman
Cameron Olson added an assist as (24) Allegheny improved its record to 6-1 on the season. The Gators next game will be Wednesday, September 21 as Allegheny will travel to Berea, Ohio to take on Baldwin-Wallace at 7:00 pm.
