Box Score
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny baseball team won its sixth straight game, claiming a 10-3 decision over Penn State Behrend at the Robertson Complex on Wednesday.
Ben Lowmaster batted 3-for-5, including a double, with three RBIs and one run scored.
Matt Stahl added a 3-for-3 day, two RBIs and a run. Stahl also earned two intentional walks.
The Blue and Gold took the lead for good in the first.
Eric Hansen worked a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Stahl.
In the fourth, Lowmaster crunched a leadoff double to right-center field. After issuing an intentional walk to Stahl, Lion starter Michael Moore induced two flyouts before Allegheny's Stephen Martinkovich plated Lowmaster with a single.
Gator starting pitcher
Justin Abbott escaped jams in the first two innings, enabling the hosts to take the 2-0 lead.
In the Behrend first, a pair of singles and a walk helped the Lions (13-7) load the bases with only one out. A flyout and a groundout removed Abbott from trouble. Then, in the second, the Abbott put two more runners on with walks, but got through the inning unscathed. Overall, he worked four scoreless innings and, at one point, retired eight straight batters.
Matt Dishong pitched the fifth inning for the Gators (12-6) and had his scoreless-innings streak snapped at 18 1/3. After inducing a leadoff groundout, he walked a pair of batters and then allowed an RBI single to Dustin Dubensky. Dishong loaded the bases with another walk, but then recorded back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Moore had trouble finding the strike zone in Allegheny's half of the fifth. A trio of walks, including an intentional pass given to Stahl, allowed the hosts to load the bases with two outs.
Jeff Dassner then provided a two-run single to extend the Gators' lead to 4-1 and chase the Lion starter.
The Lions trimmed their deficit to 4-2 in the sixth -- courtesy of Ryan Kragnes's triple and Rich Doyle's ensuing sacrifice fly -- only to be answered with a four-run inning by Allegheny.
In the Gator sixth,
James Fago hammered a leadoff homer off relief pitcher Geoff Lang.
Anthony Wilbur followed with a single and Hansen reached via error while attempting to sacrifice Wilbur to second. After Lynch was hit by a pitch, Lowmaster hit a two-run single and Stahl ripped an RBI single, giving the Gators an 8-2 advantage.
Allegheny added its final two runs in the seventh. Fago began the inning with a single, moved to second on Wilbur's sacrifice and stole third base. Hansen drove Fago in with a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Lynch doubled and then scored on a single by Lowmaster.
Behrend's final run came in the ninth when Dubensky crushed a home run.
Kyle Berns (2-0) was credited with the win. He pitched two scoreless innings for Allegheny. Moore (1-1) was the losing pitcher for Behrend.
The Gators will be in action again on Thursday when they visit Thiel. The first pitch will be at 3 p.m.
