MEADVILLE, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team took a 2-0 into halftime and held on to post a 4-1 victory over Allegheny in non-conference action on Saturday at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Pat Lutz tallied two goals, while Ryan Browne and Ricky Griffin each added a goal and an assist to help the Tartans (6-1) record their fifth straight win. The Gators (4-2), competing against a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time this season, got a goal from Pete Subasic in the 57th minute.
Carnegie Mellon only needed 2:20 gone in the first half to get on the board first. Browne fired off the first shot of the day and made it count with a goal from 10-yards out to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead. Griffin made it 2-0 in the 27th minute, hitting a low shot past Andrew Shirley.
Lutz scored both of his goals in the second half, finding the back of the net at the 53:48 mark off a point blank shot from the right side. Subasic tallied the lone Allegheny goal three minutes later. He took a shot off a deflection from goalie Maks Khurgin to get it at 3-1.
Subasic followed his goal with back-to-back shots that just went high and wide that could have been the equalizers. In the 75th minute, Griffin passed the ball from the end line to Lutz for a one-touch shot into the left corner for the final margin.
Shirley recorded eight saves in goal, while Khurgin tallied three.
The Gators return to action on Wednesday against Baldwin-Wallace. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
