Women's Tennis Successful at Home Tournament

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team opened the season with a remarkable performance at the annual Allegheny Invitational, a two-day, seven-team tournament at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Saturday and Sunday.

The Gators combined to win more than 70% of their singles matches and 85% of their doubles matches over the weekend. In total, Allegheny finished with a 26-11 singles record and a 17-3 doubles record despite facing opponents from Division I Mercyhurst University, D-II Tiffin University, and stiff competition from Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin Wallace University, Juniata College, and Washington and Jefferson College.

Multiple Gators were undefeated on their home courts. Anabel Bachman (Rogers, Ark./Bentonville), Jillian Clark (Butler, Pa./Butler), Adriana Navarro (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/DelCampo School), and Claire Terefe (Dallas, Texas/Texas Online Preparatory School) all posted 6-0 records with three singles wins and a trio of doubles wins.

In her debut as a Gator, Terefe put together an outstanding weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tiffin's Grace Arnold and a 6-2 triumph over the CWRU tandem of Rasika Anandakumar and Ava Karrenbauer while playing alongside Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School). Bassette, who was 6-1 with four doubles wins during the tournament, also beat an opponent from CWRU. She took down Sara Fernandez in a 6-4, 6-1 decision.

In her second-ever collegiate match, first-year Jade Flores (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) outlasted Mercyhurst's Mollie Gray in a super tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-0, 10-4.
