Second Half Surge Pushes Gators Past Cardinals

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half as they defeated Saint John Fisher 3-1 Saturday (Sept. 12) in Meadville.

Casey Bender (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) nearly got the Gators an early lead after running by the Cardinal backline, but a charging goalkeeper made the save. The teams battled back-and-forth in the opening half. Emma Tikey (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) put a shot on target and Alex Augustine (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) made five saves as the teams entered halftime scoreless.

Allegheny broke up the stalemate about ten minutes into the second half. Madeline Schneider (Poolesville, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) sent a short pass to Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional), about 25 yards out from the goal. Surdykowski put a shot on goal that floated into the top right corner, putting the Gators in front. The goal marked her first of the year.

The Gators extended the lead in the 79th minute. Bender sent a cross into the box from the far end of the field. The cross found Delaney David (Cleveland, Ohio/Brooklyn) in the box, who headed it past the goalie, making it 2-0.

The Cardinals scored in the 83rd minute, cutting the lead to one.

In the closing seconds of the game, Schneider had a shot saved, but Angela Campbell (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) pounced on the rebound, scoring her first goal of the year.
