MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Visiting Baldwin Wallace University spoiled the 2026 home opener for the Allegheny College women's soccer team, which suffered a 1-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets at Robertson Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening.
A passing thunderstorm delayed the start of Tuesday's contest by nearly an hour, but the inclement weather didn't slow the Allegheny (0-1-0) offense in the early portion of the game. The Gators recorded the first two shots off a free kick by
Madison Mullen (Riva, Md./Severn School) near midfield. The first shot by
Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) was deflected high into the air, and
Serena Carnahan (Plum, Pa./Plum) followed with a deep shot that bounced into the arms of the BWU (1-0-0) keeper.
In the 15th and 16th minutes, Allegheny earned a pair of corner kicks, both resulting in shots off target from Surdykowski as the Gators looked to take an early advantage.
The difference maker came in the 53rd minute. BWU's Kayln Rich scored Tuesday's lone goal. Rich's shot from the left side of the box had just enough lift to clear the outstretched arms of
Alex Augustine (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and into the net. On a corner entry in the 67th minute,
Karley Johnson (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) looked for a similar goal, but her shot fell into the arms of Baldwin Wallace goalie Mackenzie Butcher.
In the 79th minute, the Gators pieced together a quick counterattack. A long through pass from
Casey Bender (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) led
Angela Campbell (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) past two defenders down the left side of the field. Campbell's shot, however, was also corralled by Butcher.
