Softball Battles Back to Split with Thiel

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team continued Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at home against Thiel Sunday (April 11), winning the second game of the doubleheader.
 
The Gators fell in game one 12-8 before bouncing back to win game two 8-0. 
 
Game One - Thiel 12, Allegheny 8
 
Thiel got out to a quick lead as they led the game off with a solo home run.
 
In the bottom of the first, Abby Robinson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) drew a walk at a long at-bat, and moved all away to third on a Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) sacrifice bunt. Lauren Folino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) drove Robinson on a groundout, tying the game at one.
 
The Gators gained the lead in the second. Avery Magee (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) started the inning off with a double down the left field line. Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) followed up with a home run over the left center fence. It marked her first collegiate home run.
 
Jayla Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) hit a double to center to lead-off the bottom of the third. Folino then drove in another run as she knocked Jones in as the Gators' lead grew to 4-1. Later in the inning with two outs, the Gators rallied for three more runs. Sharp drove in her third run of the day with a double to the left center gap, plating Folino. Maisy Post (North East, Pa./North East) brought Sharp around with a single through the left side of the infield, making it 6-1. The final run of the frame came on a Robinson RBI single, scoring Post from second. 
 
The Tomcats made up a run in the fourth. They threatened for more, but the Gators turned a double play to get out of the inning. In the fifth, they plated four more runs to cut the lead down to one run.
 
The Gators put up a run in the sixth. Phillips reached on an error. After a single by Jones, Folino drove in another run with a single to the right center gap. 
 
However, the Tomcats pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the seventh as they moved ahead, 12-8.
 
The Gators were unable to produce a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh as they dropped game one 12-8.
 
Inside the Box
  • Sharp drove in three runs on a home run and a double.
  • Folino also drove two in while hitting a double.
  • Jones had two hits with a double.
  • Post was the fourth Gator with a multi-hit game, driving in a run.
  • Magee added a double while Robinson and Kinney singled.
 
Game Two - Allegheny 8, Thiel 0 (5 innings)
 
The Gators wasted no time getting to work in game two, putting up seven runs in the first. Robinson got the team started in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double down the third base line. Phillips then belted a home run over the left field fence as the Gators took a 2-0 lead. The home run was her first of the season. Folino and Kinney hit back-to-back singles. A RBI single by Sharp brought Folino in before Post drove Kinney in to make it 4-0. Seneca delivered the second home run of the frame for the Gators as they extended their lead to 7-0. The home run was her first as a Gator.
 
The lead stayed at 7-0 until the fourth. After Robinson singled and stole second, Jones drove her in with a single up the middle to make it 8-0.
 
Kennedy Stahl (Warriors Mark, Pa./State College Area) allowed just four hits and no runs in the five innings as the Gators bounced back with an 8-0 victory.
 
Inside the Box
  • Seneca hit a three-run home run while Phillips hit a two-run shot.
  • Stahl earned her first victory. In five innings, the first-year pitcher allowed just four hits and no walks.
  • Robinson had two hits, including a double.
  • Kinney and Folino also had multi-hit games.
  • Jones, Sharp and Post all had RBI hits.

  • Allegheny is now 26-7 all-time against Thiel.
  • Sharp and Seneca hit their first career home runs.
