CLERMONT, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team split a pair of games Thursday (March 5) at THE Spring Games in Florida.
The Gators defeated Simmons 4-3 in game one before falling to Hope in game two, 9-8.
Game One - Allegheny 4, Simmons 3
The Sharks loaded the bases with one out in the first, but the Gators limited them to just one run.
In the bottom of the first,
Abby Robinson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) reached on a third strike wild pitch and stole second.
Jayla Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) drew a walk to put two runners on. After a groundout moved the runners up,
Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) delivered a two RBI double down the third base line, giving the Gators the lead.
In the fourth, Simmons scored a run on one hit and an error, tying the game at two.
Morgan Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) reached base on an error and moved to second on a
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) sacrifice bunt. An infield single by Robinson put two runners on for Jones, who brought them in on a double to right center, giving the Gators the lead.
The Sharks cut the lead to one run in the seventh, but
Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) closed out the complete game win in the circle with a strikeout for the final out.
Inside the Box
- Jones and Sharp both had a two RBI double.
- Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Kinney and Robinson also had hits.
- Hulse went the full seven innings, striking out six while allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
Game Two - Hope 9, Allegheny 8
Robinson and
Rachel Seneca (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) drew walks in the first inning. Later in the frame with two outs and runners on the corners, Sharp singled to left field, bringing Robinson in for the game's first run. However, the Flying Dutch scored once in the inning as well to tie the game at one.
In the second,
Maisy Post (North East, Pa./North East) singled to center. Robinson would bring her home with two outs on a hit to shallow right field, putting the Gators back in front.
The Gators put up six runs in the third. Seneca had a lead-off single. After moving up on a sacrifice bunt, she stole third and reached home on an error as their lead reached 3-1. Three walks then loaded the bases for the Gators with one out. Perillo was hit by a pitch, allowing a pinch running
Abby Tomkowski (Baden, Pa./Lincoln Park Performing Arts) to score. Robinson then drew a walk as Kinney scored to make it 5-1. Phillips followed up with a two RBI single up the middle before Jones drove in the eighth run on a groundout.
Hope made up two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead to 8-3. They would then tie the game in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits and an error.
The game remained tied heading into the seventh. The Flying Dutch held the Gators off the bases in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, Hope had a lead-off single that moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter hit a shot to center field to score the runner for the game winner.

- Phillips had two hits and drove in two runs.
- Post had her first two hits and scored twice.
- Robinson drove in two runs on one hit while scoring twice.
- Sharp drove in a run on a hit.
- Jones and Perillo each had a RBI while Seneca and Kinney had hits.
- Mackenzie Keber (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge Area) made her pitching debut, going 3.0 innings while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.

- Allegheny is now 2-0 all-time against Simmons and 5-16 all-time against Hope.
- Post tallied her first collegiate hit.
