ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team shook off a seven-match skid to win its spring break finale, 5-2, against Trine University at the Lake Crane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday.
After playing one of the toughest stretches in recent history against four nationally-ranked opponents and a Division II team to start the spring portion of the season, the Gators (6-7) earned an impressive victory over a quality Central Region foe. Allegheny handed Trine (9-2) its second dual loss of the year and the Thunder's three-match win streak.
The Gators captured the doubles point, but it came with two hard-fought showdowns in the second and third bouts. Both needed tiebreakers, as
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) and
Adam Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took the No. 2 match, 7-6 (5), while
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) and
Zidaan Hassan (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) beat Trine's last tandem, 7-6 (4).
In singles, Allegheny took the top four matches. That included three straight-set wins by Memjie at No. 1,
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István) at No. 2, and Hassan at No. 4. In the No. 3 match, Trine's Andrew Spirrison once again tested Rodriguez's endurance, but the Gator senior prevailed in another tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
