MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In the last non-conference match of the spring, the Allegheny College men's tennis team defeated the University of Rochester by a 6-1 final score inside the David V. Wise Center on Saturday afternoon.
Playing a rare match indoors on the blue courts in the Wise Center, the Gators (7-7) evened their dual record with a decisive win over the Yellowjackets (4-7) with the start of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action scheduled for next week.
Allegheny won all three doubles matches, including a near-perfect 6-1 win by the top duo of
Olivier Erkens (Gouda, Netherlands/Coornhert Gymnasium) and
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István).
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) and
Zidaan Hassan (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) dropped only two games in the third doubles contest en route to a 6-2 win.
Mihaly went on to beat his singles opponent, Rahul Ravi, in the No. 2 match, 7-5, 6-3. In the No. 1 contest, freshman
Adam Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took down Andy Liu, 6-2, 6-1. The only loss suffered by the Gators was a tiebreak showdown between Rodriguez and Alan Wang in the No. 3 match. Rodriguez took the second set, 6-4, to force the tiebreaker, but Wang prevailed, 10-6, to spoil Allegheny's shutout attempt.
