Gators Survive Barnburner vs. Dubuque, 14-13

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- In a wild game that saw both teams lose their designated hitter, a combined 12 different pitchers, and an eight-run fifth inning, the Allegheny College baseball team defeated the University of Dubuque, 14-13, on Monday at Northeast Regional Park.

After giving up six runs in the top of the first, the Gators (4-2) found themselves trailing 9-4 at the midway point of Monday's matinee against the Spartans (1-5). The Blue and Gold found new life, however, with their most explosive inning of the season at the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Allegheny drove in eight runs on seven hits against three different Spartan pitchers.

The comeback began with a two-run base hit by pinch-hitter Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). The next two batters were hit by pitches, which loaded the bases for Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell). Eberhardt plated two more with a double to center field, bringing the Gators within one at 9-8. A wild pitch during the next at-bat evened the score, and Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) put Allegheny ahead 10-9 with an RBI grounder. Jake Fix (Westlake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) and Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also added RBI base hits in the inning. The damage could have been much worse, but the Gators left the bases loaded after batting around the lineup.

Dubuque answered by loading the bases and scoring twice to tie the game at 12-all in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Tommaso Floro (Sewickley, Pa. /Quaker Valley) pinch hit and smacked a two-run, two-out double to jump back into the lead at 14-12.

Although the Spartans cut the deficit to one in the seventh, Miner shut down the Dubuque batters after moving from third base to the mound to close the game. The first-year utility man struck out two of the first three batters he faced to escape the seventh, then retired the Spartans with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth.
