Gators Bested By St. Olaf in Spring Break Opener

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Allegheny College baseball opened its spring break trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on the losing end of a 14-3 decision against St. Olaf College Friday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida.

The Gators (2-1) plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning to even the score at 3-all, but St. Olaf (1-0) pieced together a seven-run bottom of the frame to pull away. Allegheny knotted the score on a two-run double off the bat of Tyler Skaggs (Champion Heights, Ohio/Champion), the team's second two-bagger of the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, however, three pitchers were needed to retire the Oles.

Allegheny was able to put runners in scoring position in four consecutive innings, but the Oles received a strong performance by Brady Stutz out of the bullpen to prevent a comeback attempt. Wyatt Burchill (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) led off the sixth with a walk, but was erased on a double play in the next at-bat. In the seventh, Connor Kunkle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) got on with a one-out base hit, but was stranded at first base.

St. Olaf followed with a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh, triggering RussMatt's seven-inning run rule.

  • Burchill, who doubled in his only at-bat, added a walk and a sac bunt.
  • Starting pitcher Parker McRay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) received the loss on the mound after giving up five runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings.

  • Stutz pitched 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts for the Oles out of the bullpen.

News and Notes
  • Allegheny suffered its first loss of the year, while St. Olaf got the win in its season opener.
  • Friday's spring break contest wasn't the first meeting between the Gators and the Oles, members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC); they split a two-game set at the RussMatt back in 2011.
  • Kunkle and Miner have started their collegiate careers with a hit in three consecutive games.
  • Burchill, a fellow freshman, logged his first hit and run as a Gator against the Oles.
  • First-year utility player Ryan Finamore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) made his first appearance on the mound, allowing one unearned run in 2.0 innings of work.
