Blue Streaks Down Gators, 1-0

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Allegheny College field hockey team was held scoreless on Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) loss at John Carroll University.

The Gators (5-6, 3-2 NCAC) finished the contest with more shots and a slight lead in penalty corners, but it wasn't enough to break through JCU's (3-7, 2-3 NCAC) goalie tandem. Allegheny earned the first penalty corner in each quarter, and the first resulted in a shot by Maddy Keenan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) that starting goalie Ava Bunce saved. In the second quarter, Josie Hutchcroft (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) rang a shot off the post, but the game entered halftime in a 0-0 stalemate.

In the third quarter, the Blue Streaks earned the first penalty corner, and it paid off. Kierra Maxie netted the game's only goal less than five minutes into the second half. It was the only shot to find the back of the cage despite a flurry of shots in the last five minutes of the third. Allegheny pummeled the JCU defense with seven shots, including a pair from Anna Merlack (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Hutchcroft.

Merlack managed one more shot in the fourth quarter, but it was also stopped by Hilgendorf to preserve the victory.
