ALFRED, N.Y. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team couldn't overcome a strong start by the hosts from Alfred State College, as the Pioneers secured a 4-2 nonconference win on their home field on Wednesday night.
Alfred State (2-0-0) scored all four of its goals in the first half, including three in a row in the eighth, 29th, and 30th minutes to grab an early lead.
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and
Cole Bowser (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) combined to snap the Pioneers' scoring streak in the 32nd minute. After a hard foul knocked
Ransom Perkins (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory School) to the turf, Gruca took the free kick from about 30 yards out. It was a perfect pass to Bowser, who was centered in front of the goal and wide open to head the ball into the net.
Despite the perfectly executed play on the free kick, Alfred State responded in less than a minute to widen the gap back to three goals. Allegheny's offense was limited to only four shots in the second half, one of which was a penalty kick. After being tripped inside the box,
Nick Magee (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) successfully converted the penalty kick in the 86th minute to reach the final score.
