Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gruca Strikes Twice in Draw with Marietta

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) scored twice, but the Allegheny men's soccer game against Marietta ended up in a 2-2 draw Saturday (Sept. 20).

The Gators had some chances early as Nathan Tolliver (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Ransom Perkins (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory School) had strikes that both just missed the net wide. The pressure finally paid off late in the half. In the 38th minute, Renen Frank (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) won a ball and passed it ahead to Gruca. Gruca took a shot from the far side of the top of the box. His shot ricocheted off the near side post before bouncing in. The goal marked Gruca's second of the year.

The Pioneers found the equalizer in the 49th minute, knocking in a cross through the box.

Allegheny was quick to answer the goal. Off a set piece from mid field, Perkins sent a pass to Cole Bowser (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll). Bowser flicked it ahead to Gruca. A quick touch by Gruca in front of the net sent the ball under the crossbar for his second goal of the game.

After back-and-forth play, Marietta tied the game once again with a goal in the 81st minute.

Minutes later, Tolliver nearly put the Gators back in front as his shot rocketed off the crossbar. The Pioneers then had the next chance with three minutes left, but Cadan Bennett (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made a key save to keep the game tied.

Each side had chances late in the game, but neither side was able to find the back of the net again as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
