Women's Tennis Victorious in PAC Championship Rematch

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In a rematch of last year's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship on Tuesday evening, the Allegheny College women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over Franciscan University at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

Tuesday's showdown between Allegheny (2-0, 2-0 PAC) and Franciscan (3-1, 1-1 PAC) was nothing like last year's title match, which came down to a third-set tiebreaker in a 4-3 decision. This time around, the Gators held the Barons off the scoreboard and en route to their 26th consecutive regular-season victory against a PAC opponent.

The only blemish for the Gators was a 6-3 setback in the No. 1 doubles match. Despite the loss, Allegheny earned the doubles point by securing a 6-2 win in the No. 2 slot and a 6-0 shutout in the No. 3 contest.

This week's PAC Newcomer of the Week, Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School), was the first singles player off the court with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory against Claire Cardie atop the lineup. Senior Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) won all 12 games in her sweep of Sophia Pastura in the fifth spot. Sophomore Evie Ellenberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) recorded the match-clinching point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Franciscan's Audrey Huckestein in the No. 6 match.

The Gators preserved the shutout with two resilient performances in the third and fourth singles matches. Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) battled back from a first-set loss to win her tiebreaker, 10-5, while Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley) took down Colette Park in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (6).
