ERIE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team opened the 2025 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Penn State Behrend on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Lions' Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament.
In Allegheny's first road trip to Erie since 2019, the Gators and Lions played a physical yet even 90 minutes. After a scoreless first half, Penn State Behrend struck first with a goal from Andy Jones in the 67th minute.
However, it didn't take long for Allegheny to respond. Although technically an own goal was the equalizer, it was the result of a good series of passes from the Blue and Gold.
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) started the play by winning a battle for the ball and sending a high lob downfield.
Nathan Tolliver (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) followed with another high pass to the right side of the box to
Nick Magee (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), who attempted to center it back to Tolliver as he crashed towards the goal line. The ball, Tolliver, a Behrend defender, and goalkeeper Anthony Scalise all collided about five yards out, but a poor clearance by another defender ended up in the back of the net.
In the final seconds of the second half, the Gators had a great chance to score the game-winner. A throw-in by
Jacob Kubik-Pauw (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Hanover (N.H.)) ended up back at his feet, and he fought through two tackles to set up a strong shot. His right-footed shot from about 25 yards out had its sights set for the far post, but a Behrend defender leapt and headed the ball off its path.
