GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Allegheny College's eight-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday afternoon after suffering a pair of losses on the road against the Wolverines of Grove City College.
Allegheny (15-10, 8-2 PAC) dropped its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games of the spring against the Wolverines (16-9, 7-3 PAC) by scores of 8-6 and 16-5 at Grove City's Jack Behringer Field.
Grove City 8, Allegheny 6
The Wolverines and Gators traded big innings early in the series opener. Grove City took the first lead of the afternoon with four unearned runs in the bottom of the second. But the Gators responded by hanging a five-spot on the scoreboard in the next half-inning. Errors also plagued the Grove City defense, which committed three in the inning. Allegheny scored the go-ahead run after an errant throw by the catcher sailed into center field on a double steal, allowing
Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood) to put the Gators up 5-4.
Grove City evened the score at 5-all in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk, then retook the lead for good with an RBI groundout in the next at-bat. The Wolverines added two more insurance runs after loading the bases with three consecutive hits in the sixth.
Down by three, Allegheny loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on singles from
Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) and
Garrett Lienhard (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) and a walk issued to
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale).
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) was given a free pass to force home one run, but the Gators left the potential go-ahead run on the bases when
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) popped up for the final out. A hit-by-pitch in the ninth brought the tying run to the plate, but Irving hit into a double play that ended the contest.
Grove City 16, Allegheny 5
The Gators jumped ahead with two runs in the second inning and added two more in the fifth to pull out in front, 4-3. Allegheny's biggest highlight of the doubleheader came in the fifth inning off the bat of
Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell). The second-year infielder, who made his first start since the team's spring break trip in Florida, recorded his first collegiate home run. The long ball briefly erased a 3-2 deficit and put Allegheny up by one.
Things were looking up for the Gators until the sixth inning. Trailing 4-3, the Wolverines put together a 13-run frame in their half of the sixth, turning another competitive contest into a lopsided victory. Allegheny used four different pitchers in the frame, but to no avail, as Grove City hit three doubles and a home run while batting around the lineup twice.Â
