MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team returned to its winning ways with an impressive showing on Sunday afternoon, as the Gators posted a combined 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Bethany College at Robert M. Garbark '32 Field.
The Gators (17-10, 10-2 PAC) punished Bethany's (9-17, 4-10 PAC) pitching staff in the series opener, a 21-1 victory that featured a trio of home runs. Allegheny jumped out to a big lead in the nightcap before finishing the two-game sweep with an 11-5 win.
Allegheny 21, Bethany 1
The Gators scored in every half inning they came to the plate, posting a crooked number on the scoreboard in all but the first inning. After the Bison tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second, Allegheny plated 20 unanswered and slugged a home run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Leading 2-1,
Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) opened the floodgates in the second inning with a bases-clearing, three-run double.
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) mashed a three-run shot in the third, while
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) did the same in the fourth. The fifth inning was highlighted by a two-run shot off the bat of
Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River). In the sixth,
Gavin White (Espyville, Pa./Conneaut Area) added salt to Bethany's wounds with a three-run base hit. Facing a full count with two outs, all three runners got a head start on the pitch, and White's bloop single down the right-field line was just enough to clear the bases.
Not to be overlooked by the hit parade was the performance of Allegheny's starting pitcher,
Mark Schweickert (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker). The senior righty scattered one run on three hits and struck out five in 6.0 innings. Schweickert retired the last nine batters he faced and cruised through the Bison 1-2-3 in his last two innings.
Allegheny 11, Bethany 5
The story of the nightcap began nearly identical to Sunday's matinee. Allegheny scored once in the bottom of the first inning, thrice in the second, and six times in the third.
JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) pulverized a solo home run in the second inning, followed by an RBI triple from Bryant-Dawson three batters later. Robinson then added a two-run double that energized the Allegheny dugout in the third.
The Gators added one more in the fifth for an 11-0 lead, but Bethany didn't allow Allegheny to end their second matchup with a mercy-rule win. Once
Parker McRay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) left the mound, the Bison pounced on the bullpen for five runs across the sixth and seventh innings.
Harrison Ashley (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School), who closed the first game, was called upon again to right the ship. The first-year right-hander got the last two outs in the seventh to prevent further damage.
McRay, the freshman southpaw, tossed a gem in his second collegiate start. He tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and held the Bison without a run for 5.1 innings.
