Bearcats Beat Baseball Twice on Wednesday

LATROBE, Pa. -- Allegheny College came up on the short end of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) baseball doubleheader sweep at Saint Vincent College, falling to the Bearcats 8-1 and 8-7 on Wednesday afternoon.

Saint Vincent 8, Allegheny 1
The Bearcats (16-18, 10-8 PAC) scattered six unanswered runs across the first six innings to take a comfortable 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Gators (17-15, 10-6 PAC) put their share of runners on the base path but couldn't find the key hit needed to drive them home.

A pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases in the top of the second. In the fourth, Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) walked and JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) legged out an infield single. Both the fifth and sixth innings ended on double plays. And an error paired with a Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) base hit put two on in the seventh.

Despite all that, Allegheny couldn't score until the top of the eighth. Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led off the inning with a single, stole second, and came around to score on one of three SVC errors. In total, 10 Gators were left on base, while the Bearcat pitching staff - led by starter Tyler Dancu - danced in and out of trouble throughout the afternoon.

Saint Vincent 8, Allegheny 7
Hoping to redeem themselves in the nightcap, the Gators turned the tide on Saint Vincent in the first half of the contest. After Allegheny failed to find a big hit in the matinee, William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) flexed his muscle with a three-run home run in the top of the first. AC added one run on an error in the third, and one on a Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) sac fly in the fourth to jump ahead 5-0. In the fifth, Gavin White (Espyville, Pa./Conneaut Area) drove in two with a base hit down the right-field line, extending the Gator lead to 7-1.

Allegheny had control of the game through the first four-and-a-half innings, but the Bearcats began their comeback in the bottom of the fifth. SVC posted three runs in the fifth and sixth, tying the score at 7-all. Not only did the hosts take advantage of numerous free passes and hit batters, but Chuck Fontana led off the sixth with a solo homer.

Bryant-Dawson moved from the outfield to the pitcher's mound in the seventh and quickly extinguished Saint Vincent's offense by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the inning. But in the eighth, Dylan Schmude was plunked by a pitch, moved up to second on a wild pitch, and then scored the game-winning run from third on another wild pitch to complete the seven-run comeback.

Inside the Box Score: Game 1
  • Allegheny produced one run on five hits, six walks, and a trio of Saint Vincent errors.
  • Four of the top six batters in the SVC lineup had multiple hits, led by Nathan Whiteman with three out of the lead-off spot.
  • Five Gators logged a hit, but none had multiple base knocks.
  • Jennings finished 1-for-4 with an unearned run in the eighth.
  • Dancu earned the win on the mound for Saint Vincent with five scoreless innings.

Inside the Box Score: Game 2
  • Both teams had eight hits with one double and one home run in the second game.
  • Wolff got things started quickly with a three-run homer in the first inning.
  • Wolff was Allegheny's only multi-hit performer, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
  • White also had multiple RBIs with two.
  • Landsnes' only hit was a double, and he scored twice with one run driven in.
  • Bryant-Dawson received the loss after giving up one run in 2.0 innings.
  • Alex Polito picked up the win by finishing the game with 2.1 hitless innings.

News and Notes
  • Allegheny falls to 17-15 overall but remains third in the PAC standings.
  • Since Allegheny rejoined the PAC ahead of the 2023 campaign, the Gators and Bearcats have split their six meetings.
  • Wolff slugged his third home run of the season in the second half of Wednesday's doubleheader.
  • In eight appearances since the beginning of April, Wolff has batted .563 with three doubles and one home run.
  • Bryant-Dawson and Jennings both extended their active on-base streaks to 30 and 25 games, respectively.
