Baseball Falls to No. 23 W&J in PAC Doubleheader

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College fell in both halves of its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against 23rd-ranked Washington and Jefferson College on Friday afternoon at Robert M. Garbark '32 Field.

In a battle of the top two teams in the PAC standings, the Presidents (23-7, 13-1 PAC) solidified their hold on first place with a 13-0 win in the early game and a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. As a result, the Gators (17-13, 10-4 PAC), who entered Friday in second place, slid one game back of Grove City College (21-9, 11-3 PAC) into third.

W&J 13, Allegheny 0
The Presidents scored once in the first and second innings, but W&J turned its 2-0 lead into a looming 7-0 advantage with a five-spot in the fourth. The inning was fueled by a two-run homer from Luke Alvarez and a two-run double off the bat of Drew Garth. W&J reached the final score by adding two in the seventh and four more in the eighth.

On the flip side, the Gators were held scoreless by senior right-hander Ethan Marszalek. Marszalek scattered four hits across 8.0 innings and struck out eight. He gave up doubles to Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) and Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) in the first two innings, but both extra-base hits came with two outs, and neither produced a run.

Reliever Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area) took the mound in the fourth inning and was a bright spot for the Gators in the opening contest. The second-year righty earned five of his eight outs with strikeouts and retired the Presidents 1-2-3 in the fifth. However, Shields was replaced in the sixth inning with discomfort in his throwing arm.

W&J 4, Allegheny 1
The highlight of the late game was the pitching battle between Allegheny's Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) and the Presidents' ace, Dante DiMatteo. The two starting pitchers matched each other with zeros on the scoreboard throughout the first six innings. Cunningham retired the first 11 batters he faced and ended the fourth having faced the minimum after picking off Knox Meier, who broke the perfect-game bid with a two-out walk. Cunningham stranded two in the fifth and, after giving up a single in the sixth, got the double play he needed.

The turning point of the contest spun momentum in Washington and Jefferson's favor in the seventh. Meier led off the top half of the inning with a double. In the next at-bat, an error on a routine ground ball to second base allowed Meier to break the scoreless stalemate with an unearned run. W&J added one more run on an RBI base hit in the inning, taking a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Allegheny looked ready to respond. William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) and Philson hit back-to-back singles, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with only one out. However, DiMatteo struck out the last two batters he faced to preserve the shutout. The only offense the Gators managed in the second game was a two-out wild pitch that allowed Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) to score in the bottom of the eighth.
