GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team picked up a road sweep of Thiel Sunday (April 13) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
The Gators won game one 4-0 and game two 4-1.
Game One - Allegheny 4, Thiel 0
The Gators got to work quickly, scoring three times in the first.
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) drew a walk before
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) doubled to put two runners on.
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) followed up with her own double to score the first two runs.
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) hit a RBI single to score Devries as the Gators took a 3-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until the seventh. Phillips was hit by a pitch and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Once again, Devries doubled to bring Phillips in to make it 4-0.
Belardinelli continued to shut the Tomcats down in the seventh as she finished the shutout by tying her career high with 13 strikeouts.
Inside the Box
- Belardinelli allowed just five hits while striking out 13 for the win. At the plate, she had two doubles to help her cause.
- Devries also doubled twice, driving in three runs.
- Blarr had a RBI single while Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) also tallied a hit.
Game Two - Allegheny 4, Thiel 1
Allegheny struck first in the second. Blarr drew a walk and ended up on third third following a single by
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian). A groundout by starting pitcher
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) brought Blarr in for the first run.
The lead was short lived however as Thiel tied it in the bottom of the frame.
The Gators regained the lead in the fourth. Devries hit another double.
Catherine Burkett (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) pinch ran and moved up on a passed ball. Genareo grounded out, but it allowed Burkett to score as the Gators took a 2-1 lead.
The lead grew to 3-1 in the sixth. Devries tallied her second hit of the game and eventually came home on a Blarr RBI single.
In the top of the seventh, Dzierba started the inning with a single.
Morgan Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) pinch ran and scored on a Phillips groundout.
The Tomcats had a hit in the bottom of the frame, but Dzierba guided the Gators out of the inning unscathed to complete the sweep.
Inside the Box
- Dzierba earned the win. She allowed just four hits and no earned runs while striking out six. At the plate, she drove in a run.
- Devries and Blarr had two hits apiece with Blarr driving in a run and Devries doubling.
- Phillips had a RBI.
- Eight different Gators recorded hits.
