Gators Rally For Game One Win at Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Allegheny softball team split a road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) twinbill at Bethany Wednesday (April 16).
 
Trailing 3-0 in game one, the Gators rallied for eight runs in the sixth to win 8-3. In game two, the Gators' rally fell just short as they dropped the contest 3-2.
 
Game One - Allegheny 8, Bethany 3
 
The Gators tallied three hits in the first two innings, but Bethany got on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the second. They added another run with two outs to move ahead 2-0. In the fourth, the Bison hit a second soo home run to increase the lead to 3-0.
 
Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) had her second hit of the game in the fifth and Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) had a bunt single to put two runners on. However, the Gators left two runners stranded.
 
The Gators rallied in the sixth to take over. Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) started the inning off with a double. Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) singled and had Catherine Burkett (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) pinch run for her. After a flyout moved Belardinelli up, an Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) single brought Belardinelli in for the first run. Sharp then recorded her third hit of the day, driving Burkett in to cut the lead to two. With Blarr and Sharp on, Long doubled to right center, clearing the bases and giving Allegheny a 4-3 lead. The inning continued as Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) singled and Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) stepped up and delivered a grand slam over the left field fence to clear the bases as the Gators gained an 8-3 lead. The home run marked her first of the season as well as her first career grand slam.
 
Belardinelli did not allow a base runner the rest of the way as the Gators sealed the comeback win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Bealrdinelli picked up the win. SHe gave up three runs on four hits while striking out eight batters. At the plate, she doubled.
  • Sharp went four-for-four with a RBI.
  • Phillips went two-for-four with a grand slam.
  • Long drove in two runs on a double as part of her two hit game.
  • Devries also had two hits.
  • Blarr had a RBI single as Perillo and Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) also registered a hit. 
Game Two - Bethany 3, Allegheny 2
 
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Bison scored one run on two hits to take the lead. They added to the lead in the fourth off a two RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0.
 
The Gators got on the board in the sixth. Phillips reached on an error before Devries would drive her home on a RBI single, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
 
In the top of the seventh, with Sharp on first, a single by Long and an error on the play put runners on second and third with one out. Starting pitcher Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) singled to right field, scoring Sharp to bring the Bison lead down to one run. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. However, the Gators were unable to push another run across as they split the conference doubleheader.
 
Inside the Box
  • Devries had a RBI single.
  • Dzierba struck out five and had a RBI single.
  • Blarr and Long also had hits. 
News and Notes
  • Allegheny is now 20-15 all-time against Bethany.
  • Phillips hit her third career home run.
