MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College men's tennis won its eighth consecutive match on Thursday night by taking out the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College, 7-0, inside the David V. Wise Center.
Playing indoors for the second time this week to avoid Mother Nature, the Gators (15-6, 5-0 PAC) handed Saint Vincent (14-3, 4-2 PAC) its third loss of the year and second PAC defeat. Allegheny also halted the Bearcats' four-match win streak while remaining the only team in the PAC without a conference loss this spring.
Ranked No. 63 in the April 9 edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national poll, the Gators received two No. 1 wins from senior
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet). His victory alongside
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) in the doubles portion of the contest was the 140th of his career, making Hedlund the third player in program history to reach that milestone. After beating Braden Yokopenic 6-2, 6-0 in his singles bout, Hedlund sits just four wins shy of passing David Howell '00 (144) for second place in Allegheny history.
At the other end of the lineup,
Paxton Garland-Sutter (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) filled in for his first dual singles match of the season. Garland-Sutter didn't disappoint, as the freshman cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Saint Vincent's William Hinkson.
