Women's Tennis Hands Trine First Loss in Thursday Split

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team split its Thursday doubleheader at the USTA National Campus by defeating Trine University, 4-3, before dropping the nightcap to Division II Cedarville University, 5-2.

Allegheny (18-3) handed Trine (7-1) its first dual loss of the year in one of the most competitive matches of the season. The Gators and Thunder played four super tiebreakers in the singles portion of the contest. Nicole Serna Cassan (Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico/Grandview Preparatory (Fla.)), Alejandra Villanueva (Bogotá, Colombia/French Touch Academy), and Adriana Navarro (Distrito Central, Honduras/DelCampo School) each dropped their opening set, but all three bounced back to win the second. In their super tiebreakers, Serna Casson defeated Emilee Bassett, 11-9, Villanueva beat Emily Hatseras, 10-8, and Navarro outlasted Addison Lockwood, 10-4.

The Gators suffered their third loss to a D-II opponent in the nightcap, but not without two more super tiebreak wins in the third and fifth singles matches against the Yellow Jackets (6-5). Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) overcame a 6-3 loss in her first set against Susannah Prince with a 7-6 (3) second-set win. Grydnieva finished the comeback in a tiebreaker, 10-4. Navarro showed off her resiliency and endurance once again in her showdown with Kaori Delsing, which resulted in a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 victory.
