MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's lacrosse team's comeback fell short against Alfred, dropping the non-conference game 12-11 Saturday (March 29) in Meadville.
After the Saxons scored first,
Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) tied the game with a goal assisted by
Kendall Cox (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein). Alfred scored the next two goals before a goal by
Lauren Petrarca (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) brought the lead back down to one. Saxons scored with 24 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Allegheny also scored late as Petrarca's second goal, assisted by
Ava Best (Butler, Pa./Butler), beat the quarter horn as the Gators trailed 4-3 after one.
Petrarca picked up right were she left off, scoring early in the second on a feed from
Ema Caragein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle). However, Alfred answered by scoring the game's next four goals. Caragein ended the run with her first goal, assisted by Smith, to cut the lead 8-5. The Saxons had the final goal of the half as they took a 9-5 lead into the locker room.
The Gators shutout the Saxons in the third as they tied the game with four goals.
Erin Lowthert (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) scored two goals in the frame. Petrarca scored her fourth while assisting Lowthert on one. Best scored the final goal of the quarter on an extra-player opportunity, assisted by Caragein, as the teams were knotted at nine heading into the final frame.
Alfred scored three goals early in the fourth as they regained the lead 12-9. The Gators cut the lead to two with under five minutes to play as Caragein converted on a free-position opportunity. A minute later, Cox set-up Petrarca for another goal as the deficit fell to one goal. However, the Gators were unable to find the equalizer as they fell in non-conference play.
