Women's Lacrosse Begins PAC Slate With 20-14 Win at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team kicked off Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action with an impressive 20-14 victory on the road Saturday at Franciscan University.

Allegheny (2-5, 1-0 PAC) got off to a red-hot start and finished strong, weathering a mid-game storm from the Barons (2-5, 0-2 PAC). The Gators scored eight of the game's first nine goals in the first two quarters. However, after Franciscan returned to tie the score at 9-all in the third, Allegheny ended on an 11-5 run en route to the win.

Penalties hurt the Barons in the early going. After being tagged with a yellow card, Lauren Petrarca (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) needed only 37 seconds to find the back of the net to put the Gators up 4-0 in the first quarter. On Allegheny's next possession, Franciscan was assessed a green card in the midfield, and Erin Lowthert (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) made the Barons pay for the infraction 21 seconds later.

After Franciscan battled back to tie the score at 9-9 early in the third, Ema Caragein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) netted the go-ahead goal after receiving a wide-open pass from Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty). Caregein won the following draw control, leading to another score from Petrarca less than a minute later. Up 13-11 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Petrarca tallied two more in less than 15 seconds, her sixth and seventh of the afternoon. Her two goals sparked a 6-1 fourth-quarter run that helped put the game out of Franciscan's reach.
