ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference road victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon inside Rochester's Goergen Athletic Center.
After having a four-match win streak snapped by No. 16 Kenyon College in the final match of the team's spring break trip, the Gators (8-6) rebounded with a strong showing against the Yellowjackets (5-4). Not only did Allegheny sweep all three doubles matches, but the Gators clinched the match with a 5-0 lead before dropping their only point at No. 5 singles.
The top doubles duo of
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and
Kristian Janci (Kysucké Nové Mesto, Slovakia/The British International School Shanghai) cruised to a 6-0 win over Rochester's Alan Wang and Surya Rajamani. It was the only shutout of the match, although the No. 3 tandem of
Olivier Erkens (Gouda, Netherlands/Coornhert Gymnasium) and
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István) came close with a 6-1 victory.
Janci added a 6-2, 6-2 win over the No. 16-ranked singles player in the Northeast Region, Krish Vennam. Mihaly also defeated his opponent in the second singles match in consecutive sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Two of Allegheny's singles wins needed a tiebreaker. Hedlund beat Rahul Ravi in a third-set tiebreak, rallying from a second-set loss to capture the match, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (2). Likewise,
Arick Baldwin (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood) closed the afternoon with a 6-4, 4-6 (4), 10-7 defeat of Josh Chu in a super tiebreak in the No. 6 match.
