Baseball Falls in Doubleheader vs. Marian

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Allegheny College baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader to Marian University on the third day of the team's spring break trip in Florida by scores of 7-6 and 15-2.

Marian 7, Allegheny 6
The Gators (2-2) opened the morning matchup with a four-run second to take the game's first lead. Tyler Skaggs (Champion Heights, Ohio/Champion) drove in the first run of the contest, and with the bases loaded, Allegheny scored again on a wild pitch. Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood) then provided a two-out, two-run base knock to double the advantage to 4-0.

The Sabres (2-0) managed to tie the game at 4-all in the third and took the lead in the fourth. With the bases loaded, back-to-back wild pitches allowed Marian to jump ahead 6-4. Although the Sabres reloaded the bases with two more walks, reliever Luke Pierce (Bristow, Va./Patriot) got out of the inning without further damage, striking out the last two batters of the frame.

Allegheny got one run back in the fifth, and Irving evened the score at 6-6 with a solo shot in the top of the seventh. However, Marian scored the walk-off run when Gus Walker was plunked by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Marian 15, Allegheny 2
The Sabres scored in bunches in the nightcap. Marian tacked on four runs in the second and fourth innings before posting a seven-spot in the top of the sixth. Only one of the five pitchers Allegheny sent to the mound made it through his appearance without surrendering a run.

Trailing 4-0 in the third, the Gators took advantage of a lead-off error that allowed Ryan Cochran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) to reach base safely. Cochran moved to third on an Irving base hit and scored on an RBI single from Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice). In the sixth, Allegheny received its only extra-base hit of the game from pinch-hitter Johnny Hughes (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale). Hughes' two-bagger moved Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) to third, and the junior outfielder came around to score on an infield single from Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison).

Although seven different Gators registered a hit, that was all the offense Marian's starting pitcher Tanner Alsteen allowed. Alsteen gave up just one earned run across 6.0 innings en route to the victory.

Inside the Box Score: Game 1
  • Both teams registered seven hits, but six walks and three hit-by-pitches gave Marian more total baserunners.
  • Irving led all Gators with two hits, including a home run, with two runs scored and three RBIs.
  • JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) and Skaggs each had one hit and one RBI.
  • Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) allowed six runs, but only one earned, in 3.0 innings as Allegheny's starter.
  • Pierce led all Allegheny pitchers with three strikeouts in just 1.2 innings.
  • Robbie Knorr paced the Sabres with three RBIs, all of which came on a bases-clearing triple in the third.
  • Starter Riley Richard pitched 5.1 innings with six hits and five runs allowed in a no-decision for Marian.

Inside the Box Score: Game 2
  • Allegheny's first two batters in the lineup each had multiple hits.
  • Irving went 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • Jennings was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Dowden, Hughes, and Rios each provided base hits off the bench for the Gators.
  • Marian's Marc Jones and Logan Rademan combined for eight RBIs atop the Sabre lineup.
  • Alsteen earned the win for the Sabres after scattering nine hits and two runs across 6.0 innings.

News and Notes
  • Irving led all Gators with a combined four hits and three RBIs on Sunday, which included his first collegiate home run.
  • Cochran, a first-year outfielder, earned his first two career hits after batting 1-for-3 in each game against Marian.
  • Another freshman, Hughes, also picked up his first career hit with a double in the nightcap.
  • Ashton Reidy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), a first-year pitcher, struck out two and did not allow a run in an inning in his Allegheny debut out of the bullpen.
