MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's basketball team came up on the short end of a 72-60 decision against Oberlin College in a nonconference matchup inside the David V. Wise Center on Wednesday night.
The Gators (1-2) opened the contest with nine of the game's first 11 points. Although both sides struggled to find their shooting touch early on, Allegheny still held a 9-2 advantage after the first six-plus minutes of action.
Lincoln Brockmeyer (Akron, Ohio/Copley) and
Eli Teslovich (Belle Vernon, Pa./Shady Side Academy) combined for the Gators' next six points, and the lead remained at six, 15-9, near the midway point of the half.
Oberlin (4-2) responded with back-to-back treys to even the score. The two teams went back-and-forth over the remaining nine-plus minutes of the first half, trading small leads and ties without much separation.
Max Wallace (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) put the Gators up 32-30 with a pair of foul shots with 2:10 to go, but the Yeoman closed the half with seven unanswered and entered the locker room leading 37-32.
Senior guard
Ryan Lang (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) kicked off the second half with five in a row to knot the score at 37-37. However, Oberlin converted an Allegheny turnover into a fastbreak bucket at the 15:26 mark, which gave the Yeomen the lead for good. After Lang's tying layup, the Gators were held to just one point on a free throw over the next three-and-a-half minutes. They never recovered from the brief drought, and Oberlin kept the lead in double digits for most of the last eight minutes.
