Trick Plays Lead to Early Success in Football's Loss at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College football team pulled out all of its tricks and put a scare into the hosts from Westminster College during the first half of Saturday's 57-21 loss against the Titans.

Fitting for the day after Halloween.

The Gators (3-6, 3-4 PAC) dug deep into the playbook and chalked up two first-half touchdowns between wide receivers Chris Gisewhite (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) and Devin Larry (Loganville, Ga./Loganville Christian), one on Allegheny's first drive that gave the visitors a quick lead over Westminster (5-3, 4-2 PAC). On the fourth play of the series, quarterback Nick Barker (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tossed the ball to Gisewhite on what initially looked like a wide receiver screen, but turned into a double pass with Larry wide open past the defense. The 68-yard trick play for the game's first touchdown put Allegheny ahead early, 7-0.

After Westminster evened the score at 7-all, Larry scored his second touchdown of the day on a traditional reception from Barker. The speedy pass catcher turned an ordinary seven-yard in route into another highlight-reel play, as he carved through the middle of the Titan defense and outran everyone for a 72-yard score, his longest of the season.

Allegheny led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, but the Titans took advantage of a few turnovers to pull out in front, 26-14. The Blue and Gold had one more first-half touchdown in them, which came at the conclusion of a 14-play, 77-yard drive that chewed more than five minutes off the clock. That series also ended with some trickery, as Barker pitched the ball to Gisewhite on a fake option-reverse, and Gisewhite found Larry in the end zone for another touchdown.

At halftime, the Gators trailed by one possession, 29-21. However, Allegheny's first two possessions of the third quarter both ended with interceptions, and the Titans held the Gators off the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon.
