WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team locked up its fourth consecutive undefeated conference schedule and secured home-court advantage for the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament with a 7-0 sweep of Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday.
The Gators (10-0, 8-0 PAC) extended their regular-season conference win streak to 32 consecutive matches. Since rejoining the PAC ahead of the 2022-23 season, Allegheny has yet to drop a regular-season match to a conference opponent. With Wednesday's win, the Gators earned a first-round bye and will begin their title defense at home in the semifinals on Thursday, October 16.
The No. 1 duo of
Evie Ellenberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and
Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) won their seventh straight match together with a hard-fought 7-6 (5) victory over W&J's (7-3, 4-3 PAC) Claire Loomis and Keiran Moorhead. For Ellenberger, the tiebreak win improved her doubles record this fall to 16-0.
Grydnieva then faced Loomis in the No. 1 singles contest. She logged her first win of the fall in the top spot with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. In the No. 2 spot, first-year
Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) nearly shut out her opponent. Palmieri dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Bella Graham.Â
