Gators Sweep Bearcats for Ninth Straight Win

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's tennis team defeated Saint Vincent 7-0 in President's Athletic Conference (PAC) play Monday (Oct. 6) at home.

The highlight of the day was the first singles match between Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School) and Saint Vincent's Carolina Walters, the defending PAC Player of the Year who entered undefeated in singles competition over the past two seasons. In a close first set, Walters won 7-5. Bassette bounced back in the second in a big way, taking it 6-1 to set up a tiebreaker. Bassette's momentum carried over to the tiebreaker, where she won it 10-5, capturing the match.

The Gators started the contest by sweeping the three doubles matches. Evie Ellenberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) at first doubles as well as Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) and Bassette at second doubles both won their matches 6-0. Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) and Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley) won 6-1 at third doubles.
